"I sat with Will and had the pleasure of introducing him to a lot of really crazy animals out there that don't get a lot of silver screen time," says marine biologist Tierney Thys. To create Spore, Wright consulted with biologists and other scientists to get a greater understanding of the process of evolution. "And that was kind of like the general presentation, the toy that we wanted to build of evolution." "If you step way back, you know, evolution is about incremental improvement of a species embedded in a larger ecosystem over large periods of time," Wright says. The points can be used to buy new features for their creatures: a new mouth, a nicer nose, faster fins and, in later stages, faster legs, a bigger brain. ![]() "So, I'm basically designing the next evolution of my species." "Then we mate and what we're going to do now is lay an egg for the next generation of our species," he says as he demonstrates how the game is played. When the creatures have grown enough, they can find a mate. Players start the game in primitive waters, eating algae and trying not to get eaten. You continue to evolve over many generations." "Basically you start as this microscopic cell. "It was kind of a hard game to make," says Wright. It takes its inspiration from evolutionary biology, and for the most part, scientists are giving it a thumbs up. The game, seven years in the making, was created by Will Wright, the man who designed Sim City and The Sims. One of the most anticipated video games ever is coming out this weekend: Spore. Simply sign-up from The Eternal Cylinder's site and you should receive a beta key within a day (at the current rate they release batches).Eventually, a player's civilization can conquer space. Should you be interested in trying out the game, the beta is currently free. The world is a very harsh place for creatures so tiny, but their size and mutation can also bring advantages! The fun does not solely come from the beautiful world and creature design or story, but also from the constant thrill of being in danger - running away from menacing creatures, whom have killed some of my herd members without my noticing. It took me 3 hours just to finish the beta, and in hindsight, realised I have missed several possible mutations. The Beta gameplay only allows you to finish the first chapter, but this is long enough to captivate you, leaving you wanting more. This allows you to have Trebhums of different mutations and abilities, so you can switch to the one that is most helpful to you in that situation. The game rewards you for exploring and using a variety of mutations: consuming food only mutates one Trebhum, not the whole tribe. ![]() a filter trunk to breathe poisonous air), or simply to aid you in certain puzzles. Such mutations are a necessity to navigate through certain areas (e.g. As an open-world, survivor game, you have to both navigate the world to avoid the dangers of other worldly creatures, find other Trebums to join (or hatch into) your herd, as well as discover foods that mutate your creature upon consumption. ![]() Just like the Trebhums, the player has no idea what is going on, and you start learning about the Trebhums and the world bit by bit, both with the help of the narrator and through exploration (you will come across elder Trebhums in shrines that share their wisdom). ![]() As your instinct tells you, you start running and exploring this fascinating world. You start off with a hatchling that can walk and absorb things with its trunk, and immediately find the danger of the Eternal Cylinder - which literally is an eternal cylinder - crushing the world. In The Eternal Cylinder (coming in 2021), you control a herd of creatures called Trebhums. ![]()
